Hey there all,

Well this is something else. A nice glimpse of someone as awesome as Mangini in the studio.

He goofs around for a bit and then nails a track. Although I can't really stand this type of music, it's hats off time...

I reckon you could get a drum machine to do that and it wouldn't sound too different. Horrible playing IMO.

Like I said, I don't like the music. From a drummer's point of view, I can appreciate how much technical wherewithall it takes to pull it off...

Henry, those are good vids too - for those of us that appreciate this style. The 3:2 one's been on my hard drive since the day he posted it.

Roddy's a credit to the speed & metal drumming genre[s], & also def is not a 1 or 2 dimensional player.
He was also of a soft-spoken manner when i met & spoke with him [maybe he takes out his "frustrations" in his drumming [img]wink.gif[/img] , as do i try to do AW].

One comment he made I'll relate here [nothing revolutionary or profound]; as is the usual, when 2 or more drummers are chewin' the phat, cats like Vince or Weckl may tend to eventually come up in the conversation [img]wink.gif[/img] , & i said to him how some guys bag on Weckl for his "precision feel" or "lack of grease," & he says something to the effect of, "bagging [period] on Weckl, huh...yeah, I don't buy it..." [img]cool.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/party.gif[/img]

Mangini is a bum-blistering techno-fuso-rockin'-metal player, it 'tis what it 'tis, nothing more or less, 'nuff said.

I hear what Dazz is saying regarding this particular tune AWA a large body of what some of these great techno-players are known for...maybe what some are saying is..."we need more dynamics &/or human feel/grease in contempo-metal-fusion" [perhaps that's an oxymoron /;-]]...well, I guess one might have to consider going back in time & DE-invent the click/drum machine... /;-p [it's the Nature of the Beast, i suppose]...

It would be interesting to hear Dennis on a full-on metal project...speed n grease, oh my, how tasty....& I also wouldn't mind hearing Weck on a studio metal project either [I didn't necessarily say "live tour"]. I wouldn't say he couldn't handle it either...they can do amazing things with in-studio FX to make drums sound like they're taking a monstrous thrashing. Dave would KILL a metal session, don't kid yourselves. He's not always the light airy touch Dave, although he's not as visually bombastic as many metal guys [stick heighths, etc]. Can ya say "melodic metal drumming?" I've seen Dave many times in clinic. Don't think he can't whop some hard-rock drums. He can bring it. When i've seen him in clinic, esp in '92, he was playing some driving, hard-rockin'-fuso shedt that would curl Aldridge or even Li'l John's hair. And a sound tech/engineeer can do the rest.
WOULD he do it, i suppose, is the real ?... /;-]

Well, I guess I took a slight detour there...[ah well, one thing leads to another]...

Thanks for all the feedback guys,

A predictible variety of responses from some, ranging from "It's not music" to "Wow"...

The reason I posted it up was because it illustrated a point.

The point was, Mangini was goofing around, mucking about, just making the engineer laugh and getting him on his side... (something a few in here could take note from no doubt...). Then he settles into playing what the song needs (like the song/genre or not) and nails it. A true mark of professionalism...
